Caring beyond the city: Life as a Rural LAP aged care worker

Working in aged care is one of the most rewarding roles in healthcare and with the Rural Locum Assistance Program (Rural LAP), it’s also one of the most flexible and fulfilling. Rural LAP, funded by the Australian Government, provides short-term locum support to aged care services across rural, regional and remote Australia. By connecting passionate nurses, carers and allied health professionals with facilities in need, Rural LAP helps ensure older Australians continue to receive the quality care they deserve, no matter where they live.
Placements typically range from 14 to 90 days, giving nurses the opportunity to experience a variety of care settings and communities without committing to a long-term contract. All travel, accommodation and administrative arrangements are fully covered, so you can focus on delivering excellent care while we take care of the logistics. Our dedicated support team is with you every step of the way, from matching you with the right placement to assisting with paperwork, flights and ongoing support while you’re on your placement.
For many nurses, joining Rural LAP has been a career-defining move.
“As a locum nurse of more than four years, I used to arrive at contracts where staff were hesitant about locums,” says James Baker. “But every placement I’ve had with Rural LAP, I’m greeted with, ‘Oh thank God — we know they only send the good ones!’ That level of trust and respect makes all the difference. Plus, it’s always a bonus running into other Rural LAP nurses I’ve worked with along the way.”
For Bronwyn Picton, the decision to join Rural LAP over a decade ago transformed her career. “Spread your wings and explore other nursing opportunities, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done,” she says. “This year marks 13 years working with Rural LAP and I’ve never looked back.”
Locum work through Rural LAP also offers unparalleled variety and flexibility. “It’s a great way to travel, expand your skills and experience life in different communities,” adds John Gillego. “You’ll meet great people, gain valuable experience and enjoy the freedom the role provides.”
Whether you’re seeking new professional challenges, more flexibility, or the chance to make a meaningful difference in aged care, Rural LAPoffers a supportive, rewarding and respected pathway. With travel and accommodation taken care of, short-term placements available year-round and a dedicated team supporting you every step of the way, there’s never been a better time to take your skills where they’re needed most.
